2012
Seems like everyone is anxious for change. For promises to be kept, for dreams to be fulfilled, for stuff to start happening. Maybe 2012 will be the year. I know that I feel this way about every new year; that it will be “the one”. But I think the secret is to start doing. Not sit around waiting for stuff to happen, but start making stuff happen.

findings
Today I took a hike up the steep mountain range behind our neighborhood. It was amazing! The landscape was very raw and beautiful, scraggly and rocky and isolated. Near the top I came upon the ruins of a home or castle - it was worn down to only a few feet above ground. The view from the top was amazing, I could see the Mediterranean from every side, and villages below. On the way down I...

Market day
I went Christmas shopping today (with my mom and sisters)! First went to the big market that is open every Friday downtown. It is unlike any flea market or yard sale you might see in America; it is a very exotic, ethnic, middle-eastern experience. The majority of it is spices, vegetables, fruits, cheeses, and olives. Did I mention that olives and figs and cheese are Turkish staples? The...

a huge issue
Because grassroots politics have moved the burden of decision-making from the politicians to the individual citizen, we have more responsibility for bringing change and coming up with solutions to global issues. Some of the issues that concern me are human trafficking, poverty/global stratification, corruption, and homicide; basically anything that involves exploitation of the weaker, poorer, more...

Observations
This morning I went downtown for my Turkish lesson. It was pretty easy, for I had covered the material already. I think I will learn fast - on the way home I stopped at the pasta magazasi (pastry shop) and talked to the shop owner and made my order entirely in Turkish. One of the reasons I want to pick up the language quickly is because one of the people I’ve met here, a...
