Highlights of shopping at a Turkish market

I went shopping at the Grand Bazaar again today for the third time, and it was as enjoyable an experience as ever. I’m trying to decide how on earth I’m going to tell you about it, for there is SO MUCH and I don’t know where to start. It’s kind of like describing a color to someone.

The Grand Bazaar, situated in the heart of Istanbul, is one one of the largest markets in the world with 5,000 shops. Don’t you dare think of your local flea market when trying to picture the Grand Bazaar - there’s no comparison (other than they are both markets). Parts of the GB are under a roof, other parts are open air. The variety of items sold there is astounding, but the most frequently spotted items are traditional Turkish pottery, scarves, Turkish Delight, and jewelry.

I bought lots of things to take home, sorry I’m not going to tell you what they are, but I don’t want any of my friends to know what I’m bringing them. Let’s just say I bought so much that I’m going to have to throw away some clothing in order to bring them home. And the highlights of today? The shopkeeper who said in a thick accent “Can I show you something you don’t need?”, bargaining for a bag and getting it half price, being told that I’m beautiful, trying out the musical instruments at a stand, and spending time with my Grandma (priceless).
